  1. National Lampoon’s Vacation

When you think of road trip-inspired movies, National Lampoon’s Vacation is probably the first one that comes to mind—and for good reason. This 1983 classic comedy documents the Griswold family’s road trip from Chicago to California, all in a quest to visit the Southern California amusement park Wally World. The Griswold family road trip doesn’t go off without a hitch, however. On the contrary, this film documents the trials and tribulations of the road trip. Chevy Chase stars as Clark Griswold, the man behind the wheel of the station wagon, during this funny and foiled road trip.

  1. Little Miss Sunshine

The critically acclaimed and Academy Award winning Little Miss Sunshine debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006. This road-trip inspired dark comedy follows the Hoover family, played by stars including Toni Colette, Greg Kinnear, Steve Carrell, and Abigail Breslin. The adventure begins as the family loads up in their Volkswagen van to take Breslin’s character, Olive, to perform in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant. Naturally, plenty of challenges ensue during the road trip, and the pageant results in even less success. Despite the failed attempt at landing the Little Miss Sunshine crown, Olive and her family bond on this family-focused journey.

  1. The Hangover

Most of The Hangover might take place on the Las Vegas strip, but this buddy comedy starts off with a simple bachelor party road trip. This 2009 film was a blockbuster hit, with actors Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifanakis transforming into an uncommon trio that takes on Vegas. Traveling in the groom soon-to-be father-in-law’s vintage Mercedes, the guys hit the road for a weekend getaway in Vegas. Hijinks naturally ensue, including an unexpected encounter with Mike Tyson and a tiger.

  1. Rain Man

Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise starred in the Academy Award winning film Rain Man, which debuted in 1988. In this film, Hoffman and Cruise play brothers who find each other after their father passes away and a battle over his estate begins. Ultimately, Cruise’s character Charlie breaks Hoffman’s Raymond out of his mental institution for a cross-country road trip. Raymond’s strict routine challenges the free-wheeling Charlie, and the brothers clash, but ultimately bond, on this road trip.

  1. Dumb & Dumber

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels play not-so-smart friends who set out on a wacky adventure. This buddy comedy, which was released in 1994, follows the duo on a cross-country road trip to reunite Lloyd (Carrey), a limousine driver, with Mary, a client who left her briefcase in his limo. Naturally, some missteps occur, making their road trip one filled with challenges. Even though Lloyd confesses his love for Mary when they reach their destination, she doesn’t reciprocate. Nonetheless, this road trip comedy is packed with laughs and will get you ready for your next adventure.

If you’re feeling a hint of wanderlust, get in the road-trip spirit by watching one of these movies. Or, plan a road-trip movie marathon before your next getaway—and hope that your journey is a smoother one than the adventures documented in these unforgettable films.
